As a follow on from my post about homemade salve, I thought I would tell you about my first attempt at making body butter.
I’ve watched a lot of people make body butter, and read their tips and advice, but I have been nervous to give it a try myself. I’m not completely sure why, but I think it is because I was worried about wasting a batch of salve ingredients.
Since a bit of time goes into preparing the herbs and flowers, I didn’t want all of that to go to waste. As a compromise (with myself), I decided to make the salve as normal, then use half of the mixture to make into body butter.
It was a little nerve wracking, but really very simple in the end. After pouring half the liquid into a salve tin, I simply used an electric whisk to emulsify the remaining cooling liquid. And you really need to whisk, so an electric whisk is best.
As I whisked, it changed from a rich yellow liquid, to a thick, pale yellow cream. Magic.

I will definitely give it another try, but this time I will use less olive oil, (I find it a little greasy for body butter), and add slightly more shea butter. I think that this will mean that I will have to use more essential oil, but now that I know it works, I’m happy to experiment.
Have a look at my earlier post on how to make salve for the recipe.
